Works surprisingly well ...Apr 07, 2010
By David Carswell This device feels cheap; the plastic shell feels flimsy, and you can feel the back flex when you hold it. It really does look and feel like complete junk.
On the upside, though, I've had mine for at least five years. I bought it because it was very, very cheap, and my past experiences with stud finders had left me with the impression that they were generally of questionable value ... I found that knocking on the drywall to be much more accurate. This cheap little unit showed me how wrong I was. Even without nails or wires, this gadget is accurate enough to show me both edges of the stud. Every time.
I do have one caveat ... there is a "glitch" that led me to believe that this model was also garbage for a while, until I figured out how to use it. It has a "deep scan" mode; now, I generally use a stud finder to find studs behind drywall. "Deep scan" isn't necessary for that. In fact, in my experience, "Deep Scan" *always* reveals something behind the wall. Always. The problem is that switching between "normal" and "Deep Scan" mode is too easy ... there are directions printed right on the back of the device ... follow them, make sure you are not in "Deep Scan" mode, and this unit will work like a champ.

trouble with textured wallsNov 06, 2010
By gtmsbt I bought the unit several years ago and it works great on smooth walls. Then I put a textured wall in our pantry and the unit would beep all the time.

Exactly what I was looking for, detector works great. I had absolutely no problems with battery replacement or anything else. It works well with rechargeable battery which is a plus.

not as good as the old magnet stud findersAug 19, 2011

For yrs I had one of the old stud finders that just consisted of small magnets that swung back and forth as you passed over a nail or screw head. Crude, and "hit or miss", but it was cheap, often worked at finding a stud, and didn't make me curse. Then I bought this cheap Zircon and I became a cursing expert. Thanks Zircon for expanding my vocabulary! The problems: (1) had to press the side button very hard for it to operate, and if you unintentionally let up on pressure on the switch, the @*# thing would turn off and I had to start over on my sweep of the wall; (2) sometimes, it would not beep or turn light on even when I passed over a spot where I knew there was a stud; (3) other times, it would indicate a stud on one sweep, but then when sweeping back the other direction, it would either fail to find a stud at all, or would say the stud was in a different location entirely; (4) also had to change batteries often to even get it to work. Finally, we parted ways on one occasion when it was really important to find exact stud locations--after giving multiple false results, and exhausting my cursing, it went to stud finder grave yard when I flung it against the floor, only to hear it "BEEP"--it had the last word--it must have detected a stud in the floor. You'll have a BIG smile on your face when you pick up all the shattered plastic parts like I did. :{0)

Cheap, small, but it worksJan 24, 2011

As other reviewers have mentioned, it's small and plastic and kinda cheap feeling when you get it. You're almost dissapointed when you first see it. In a store, I might not have bought it if it were surrounded by it's name brand, beefier looking cousins. But I'm glad I did!
Why? 1. It's affordable. very affordable. 2. It's so simple it's not even funny. Start on a hollow of the wall, hold down the button, and move it over the wall till it finds a stud. Super easy. Every now and then, if it sense wiring or metal, it might freak out on you, but make sure to start on an area where there is no stud, and this rarely happens. 3. It's pretty darn accurate! Was happily suprised by that!
The bad? Well, I didn't really need the picture hanging stuff.. got a drawer of that anyway. Now I have more. :/ Also, it takes a 9v battery. Who uses 9v batteries anymore?? (besides the people who make smoke detectors) It was annoying to have to go out and get one just to use this. Would have preferred AA or AAA's really.
Overall, though, I am very happy with this purchase, and this thing has been incredibly handy for doing things around the house. Wish I had it sooner! Shipping from vendor was also pretty fast, which I appreciate.
