2Very Disappointing 'Tool'Apr 20, 2011
By Matthew C. Grimes
Had a gift card and purchased this at a store - on a whim. Usually I do check online reviews before purchasing something, but I didn't this time. I should have...

Positives:
The compass is very accurate from what I can tell and even has a small bubble so you can make sure that the instrument is level.
The flashlight is okay, but not intended to be used for extended periods. (Not until you open the package do you see a message that reads, "...not intended for continuous use as flashlight.")

Negatives:
Whistle is terrible. Has a dull squeal noise that gives you more of a headache than anything else. Not even close to a whistle you can get from a kit like the S.O.L. one. Can't trust this highgear one.
Clock and thermometer instrument panel doesn't stay constant. Meaning, the time or temp flashes and doesn't stay constant. I find that particularly annoying and constantly has me thinking that its broken.
Mirror and magnifying glass could have been larger and made out of better material. In fact, the mirror doesn't stay fully out when deployed and will flop back into its slot. Very shoddy...

Closing Thoughts:
Do not buy this. Save your money on a kit if you are thinking of using this on a trail or in a survival bag.

Flashlight should have one LED to save battery time and nix the mirror and magnifying glass for a large internal compartment.

2Mixed feelingsDec 09, 2010

Update : Either build a custom kit, or get the SOL Origin. If you want an all-in-one survival kit/tool the SOL Origin is orders of magnitude better.

The tool is much bigger than I expected, its the size of a large folding knife, or perhaps a small tv remote control. However, it is still small enough to fit into a jacket pocket. Of course sacrifices must be made when making an "all in one" but there are some things I wish they would have done differently.

The mirror is very small, like the other review said good for looking in your own eye. I don't know that I would rely on it as a signal mirror tho.

the magnifying glass is also quite small and is maybe 2x magnification. I will test trying to light a fire with it, but I don't hold out much hope.

A bigger glass and mirror would have helped a lot, especially since the unit is already so large.

The unit is very light, I am concerned about its durability.

all in all you will probably be better off with separate tools put together in an altoids tin or something.

4Highgear tool (as reviewed by my 7-year-old)Jun 26, 2010
By M. Cheney
Magnifying glass is the best one I've had. Mirror is good for looking at your eye. Flashlight is a good design but battery runs out fast. Thermometer is a little off course. The clock is wonderful. The compass is the best working one I have, but it needs more detail. Whistle is a big loud scream. The batteries fall out too much. Kind of a medium tool.

This was a gift for someone, and the time and temperature features do not work at all;why event put such features if they are just for show. No manual was there either. Other than that, it is what it is.

4Not a bad little thing.May 04, 2011

For the price, this isnt a bad little thing. Nice for hiking, fishing and just to have around. The compass is functional, the magnifier magnifies, the light kills the battery kind of quickly, but for an emergency, it's fine. Unless you want to spend a ton more money, this is useable.
