handy and effective mosquito repellerMay 22, 2012

I bought a Flowtron Mosquito Guard last year as I'm always on the look out for green approaches to our mosquito problem. We had work men in the garage, door open, acting as bait for the little bloodsuckers. The guys were miserable until I put one of these in the open doorway. Within about ten minutes the bugs had cleared out and didn't return as long as the mosquito guard was on. Unfortunately, when I went to buy refills this year they were very difficult to find. I don't know if this means the company plans to discontinue the item or not. It would be a shame if they did because I found it a very handy and effective little machine.
The mosquito guard runs on a D cell battery, which I like. No cord and a rechargeable battery make it portable and greener than the butane-run mosquito repellants. The odor is not unpleasant, though it's best to have it a few feet away as it can become overpowering. A downside was that it can be difficult to open the machine to refill it and, as noted above, the refill itself may be elusive.
