Well Designed Photo AlbumOct 28, 2009
By ABinDC I received the Album yesterday. It is very easy to use. I can't say that I have found out everything the Album can or cannot do (I did have to work today!). However, I did not have to read a manual to figure out how to use the features I have accessed. There is a one page guide but no user manual in the package. (There is a manual on the website at [...] - none is needed.
Power Supply The album has a chargeable battery. One nice feature on the charger is the plug. It has snap-in prongs so your album is international. When you travel, snap-in the appropriate prongs for the country being visited.
Packaging I also liked the packaging. It is wrapped in a black Styrofoam box that is attractive and small enough to keep so that if you want to pack the album in your luggage, it would be safe. I have never before been impressed by the design aesthetic of Styrofoam packing!!
Transfer of Photos I use Adobe Lightroom and do not store my photos in JPEG. I used the USB connection to link the Album to my computer. In Lightroom, I made a quick collection of the photos I wanted to transfer and then exported them as JPEG to the Album. The export and transfer of 50 photos was very fast.
Photo Quality I used a reduced quality JPEG because the display is essentially a 4x6 (actually 3.75 x 6). The images quality is excellent. I brought it into work and shared. Everyone was impressed by the picture quality.
Viewing The size is about that of a "brag book". It is like having a photo album about the size of a 100 page paperback book - but it can hold 1000's of photos. Enough to bore any group! While you can fold the cover and use the book as a frame, it really works well as a handheld. It is like shuffling through a stack of photos. You can set up a slide show or just press the very nice (big - but visually unobtrusive) buttons on the side to shuffle through the pictures. With the buttons you can spend as much or a little time ooh-ahhing over a single photo. So while it can be used as a frame - it really is an album. The Album defaulted to full screen. In that mode, all pictures take up the entire screen. That means you have a mix of landscape and portrait photos. While remarking to someone about this, we agreed that it was too bad that the portrait photos did not automatically rotate. Then we realized that we had shared a "duh" moment. This is a handheld album. Do it the old-fashioned way. Rotate the album! However, in playing around with the advanced options, I noticed that is I "unchecked" the full screen, the photos were all oriented to landscape. Of course, this reduced the size of portrait pictures. Photos that had a smaller crop ratio were shown with the true height/width ratio. However, the background is black and even with the small size the photos are very crisp and clear.
Organization of the Album The Album allows you to organize your photos in folders (that you name). On the main photo page you get "film strips" with some of the images from each folder. As you scroll through, the name of the folder shows when it is selected. You can see the "film strip" for five folders at one time. Along with folders names (in alphabetical order), this makes it very easy to find the pictures of interest.
Overall Evaluation I am thinking Christmas gifts. So far - I really like it. The design goes beyond being usable to being an attractive feature of its own. It feels and looks like a quality product. It is not flimsy. The back is metal with album written in raised dots. The front cover is leather with an "a" written in embossed dots. The cover is held on securely with magnets. Maybe one day replacement covers will be available. The face is shiny black with large flush set buttons that look more like a design etched into the frame than buttons. They are visually unobtrusive but really easy to use.

Just like the old-time photo album - only better!Dec 21, 2009

I wanted something that was both portable and simple so I could show off the pictures of a recent trip to Germany .
The Album by Digital Spectrum fits the bill perfectly. It is easy to fill with photos directly from most digital cameras. The photos are easily accessed and shown, either in manual mode or as a timed slide show. And the pictures can just as easily be deleted when they get dated and you no longer want to show them off. But you can also carry them for a long time because the memory storage capacity is huge.
The only thing that kept it from getting 5 stars was the design of the cover/stand. It is strong but not real stable. If you want it to stand on its own as a picture frame display, you would need to prop it against something to be sure it is secure.
But as a hand-held album that you can narrate as you show the pictures, it's perfect. My wife took it to work and already has been asked by several co-workers where they can get one.
It's a great way to share memories.
