Deal of the YEAR for a TITANIUM watch!Jan 17, 2009
By Y. Tsuchida
"ABearInTheWoods"
I'm a guy that likes gadgets, gizmos and lots of data from my electronic devices. I'm also an avid outdoorsman, rough on equipment, and I've traditionally been reluctant to invest large amounts of money in a wristwatch that I'm likely to destroy quickly. And finally, I'm mostly interested in a functional timepiece that I can just wear and forget about for all occasions (the woods, travel, night on the town, skiing, etc). So when I saw this TITANIUM case watch, WITH an altimeter, barometer, compass, thermometer, ascent (climbing)/descent (skiing) computer, Indiglo backlight, dual time, dual alarms, stopwatch, and user-changeable batteries, at the BARGAIN PRICE (around the holidays), I was stumbling over myself to order it! This is an outstanding sale price for such a feature loaded watch made of the space age material Titanium.
Um... of course Titanium scratches, just like steel, just like gold, just like aluminum, just like silver, just like resin, just like plastic, just like any other material that watches are made of. Titanium (our 22 element) is about as light as aluminum in weight, but is about 4 times stronger than steel. It is very heat resistant, and has a very high melting temperature. Titanium, as a metal, is very corrosion resistant, is also a poor conductor of electricity, it is non-magnetic, and it is hypo-allergenic. These are just some of the reasons why Titanium is so expensive and why we build things like spacecraft, submarines and super-sonic jets with it. If you want something to last, Titanium is just about the best thing that you can possibly make something out of.
The watch itself works beautifully. I have to warn you, it is not for everyone. You have to have some tech-savvy, or at least be interested in the scads of information that this watch will throw at you on almost every screen (there are 6 screens with different displays). It comes with a good instruction booklet which is a necessary read if you want to use some of the advanced functions (like logging your skiing data, or predicting weather trends). My favourite instrument on it so far is the digital compass, which I found to be very accurate and practical. It features a great "digital" bezel that rotates in realtime. The thermometer is rendered inaccurate by body heat, but I find that if you take the reading and subract 14 degrees F from it, it gives the local air temperature (compensating for my body heat).
I've only tested it's durability and reliability a few times so far, but it appears to hold up well in water and rugged use (like shock - drops).
I consider the user-changeable battery (easily opened battery compartment) a major improvement for a watch of this type. Yes, this class of watch will tend to burn through batteries pretty fast (less than a year life on the average), so I glad I don't have to go through all the trouble and expense of professional battery changes (with pressure tests to ensure the water resistant seal).
The styling is nice too. It looks "retro" (like an early LED watch), yet "modern" (clean, alien-technology lines and metal composition). It works well with a suit, or my field khakis.
Compare this with other Titanium case watches out there. Compare this with other altimeter, barometer, compass watches out there. Go ahead.
Even at $250, this watch is an EXCELLENT value.
Update 6/29/11:
This watch is still going strong. The battery changes are fairly easy to do, however, there is a metal retainer covering the battery that must be... well...er.. pried off. The water resistance, I must say, has held up pretty well, despite some impromptu immersions.
What has not held up well is the strap. I don't know what High Gear was thinking when they designed the strap this way but, customers should be aware, that the rubber part of the strap is actually held onto the watch by a plastic base, which in turn is held onto the titanium body with some hex screws. The problem is, the actual contact between the plastic base and the rubber strap is.... two tiny, tiny (like thread thin) pieces of rubber! It lasted a good year or so, but of course it eventually failed and I was shocked to learn that my watch had depended on such a narrow string of material to hold it together. Furthermore, because of this unusual hex screw and plastic base design, one cannot buy a common replacement strap (that uses conventional pins). I didn't want my watch hanging from 2 threads of rubber, so I opted to continue using it as a sort of pocket watch.
Other than that, the watch continues to perform nicely (accurately). The rate of power consumption is much better than the Suuntos.

By Mystro To start out...The Altis ti and Altis SS are the same watch except that one is made of titanium and the other out of stainless steel. Both watches have heft and are built like a brick. The band is high quality rubber with breath slots cut into them and are fitted seamlessly to the watch.
The Altis SS is a large attractive, premium watch from Highgear. that wears very nice and can be used for all occasions (unlike a lot of other bulky brand watches with these features). I found the strap to be very comfortable. Excellent looking, accurate, and simple to use once you master the features. I use this watch for hunting and navigation in deep woods.
Somehow Highgear found out a way to take a very complicated watch and make it simple to use in the field and make it look good as well. Display is large and crisp looking with a good back light that has its own designated button. Mineral glass face is very scratch resistant. Water resistant to 50m but is NOT recommended for scuba diving because of the barometer. The compass is very easy to display quickly.
I have tested the altimeter many times with my GPS and found it to be surprisingly accurate. I test the barometer with a my local weather station and it too is dead on. Changing the battery can be done in the field using a coin and cr2032 battery.
This review would go on and on if I were to get into all the features of the ALTIS. I recommend checking out Highgear's web site to get a full list of features. Don't be overwhelmed when you first get this watch. You will need a few days playing with the ALTIS along with the manual to get the general layout and features but when you understand how the watch is laid out and how its features operate, it becomes second nature to access them in the woods.
IMO, this is THE watch to own for hunters, hikers, climbers, or anyone that goes deep into Gods country and needs a serious navigational watch. It's a bargain for its features and price. Highgear is a USA company out of North Carolina.

Great Outdoor Watch For The MoneyJan 06, 2009

I received the Highgear Altis Ti as a Christmas gift and am pleased with it so far. The build quality is good, and I've not noticed a tendency for the titanium casing or mineral glass face to scratch. I had some concerns about the accuracy out of the box, but a unit like this requires calibration. After going through the calibration steps all functions were within reasonable accuracy limits. This watch WILL need to be calibrated regularly to maintain accuracy, but that is to be expected with an item like this. At the pre-Christmas price of $125, this watch was a steal. Even at the normal price, it's still worth it if you are looking for an outdoor watch that has enough style to wear everyday.

I have owned this watch for 20 months. I enjoy snowboarding, surfing, mountain biking, hiking, fly fishing, and just about anything outdoors. I decided that a watch with this many functions would be a great fit for my outdoor lifestyle as well as look classy enough to wear with business casual clothes. I sent back this watch to Highgear who have been bought out by Implus Footcare LLC to have them replace the band. They have successfully replaced the band free of charge. I respect a company that aims to please the customer. However, you might want to select another style of watch from Highgear because this one is being discontinued.
