Better than my SuuntoApr 03, 2009
By Jeff Glasson

Previously I had a Suunto ALtimax that started resetting randomly. The Altis is much sturdier and more accurate. It's also easier to use. I don't have to keep referring to the manual to figure out how to use the log book.
I use the watch mainly to keep track of total vertical feet skied in a day. I've used it for 5 days of skiing and it's great!
The watch is also smaller than other altimeter watches in the price range.

Built like a tank. A Professional ABC watch.Jun 29, 2010
By Mystro To start out...The Altis ti and Altis SS are the same watch except that one is made of titanium and the other out of stainless steel. Both watches have heft and are built like a brick. The band is high quality rubber with breath slots cut into them and are fitted seamlessly to the watch.
The Altis SS is a large attractive, premium watch from Highgear. that wears very nice and can be used for all occasions (unlike a lot of other bulky brand watches with these features). I found the strap to be very comfortable. Excellent looking, accurate, and simple to use once you master the features. I use this watch for hunting and navigation in deep woods.
Somehow Highgear found out a way to take a very complicated watch and make it simple to use in the field and make it look good as well. Display is large and crisp looking with a good back light that has its own designated button. Mineral glass face is very scratch resistant. Water resistant to 50m but is NOT recommended for scuba diving because of the barometer. The compass is very easy to display quickly.
I have tested the altimeter many times with my GPS and found it to be surprisingly accurate. I test the barometer with a my local weather station and it too is dead on. Changing the battery can be done in the field using a coin and cr2032 battery.
This review would go on and on if I were to get into all the features of the ALTIS. I recommend checking out Highgear's web site to get a full list of features. Don't be overwhelmed when you first get this watch. You will need a few days playing with the ALTIS along with the manual to get the general layout and features but when you understand how the watch is laid out and how its features operate, it becomes second nature to access them in the woods.
IMO, this is THE watch to own for hunters, hikers, climbers, or anyone that goes deep into Gods country and needs a serious navigational watch. It's a bargain for its features and price. Highgear is a USA company out of North Carolina.

5 weeks owner, and WOWSep 03, 2009

THIS WATCH ROCKS. 1st it's shaped properly and isn't quite as clunky as you might think. I have med-small wrists, and it seems to work well for everyday use, everyday running, hiking and climbing. I'm just writing in to relay my most recent experience. I moved from Minnesota (~900ft) to Boulder, CO (~5450ft), and then two weeks later I went for a hike in the Sandia Crest mountains near Albuquerque, NM. The trailhead had an elevation on it, the first I'd seen in 2 WEEKS, listed at 10260ft. My watch showed 10250ft. In the rush of getting settled in Boulder, I had NOT recalibrated the watch in about 2 weeks, when I knew my elevation in MN and reset it daily. Having gone from MN to CO to NM (not recalibrating) and to be so close to the real elevation anyway, it blows my mind. This thing is amazingly good. Still, it's pressure, so give it +/- 100ft as a general rule. Durability seems good, but hey, I've only had it about 5 weeks.

HighGear Altis Computer WatchFeb 01, 2010
By Ezerana This watch is well made, a good value when on sale, and sleek compared to other altimeter watches (which tend to be big and heavy), but I found it difficult to figure out. I bought mine primarily to measure elevation changes on runs and hikes. The instruction manual (thick, but most of it due to translations in other languages) showed how to set the watch and base readings and how to navigate between the many functions, but it gave no field examples of what those functions measure or in which situations they would be valuable. Unless you're a techno geek, an expert on altermeters, or can have face time with either, this is not the watch for you. I returned mine using Amazon's slick returns policy.
